Introduction

Pregnancy is one of life’s most transformative experiences—but also one of the riskiest. Maternal mortality remains unacceptably high, and brief, occasional checkups leave long gaps when complications can silently develop. BobiHealth was founded on a simple idea: combine everyday health data, artificial intelligence (AI), and compassionate design to make pregnancy safer, more connected, and more human-centered.

Biometric Monitoring: From Checkups to Continuous Insight

Continuous tracking of signals such as blood pressure, heart rate, sleep, and temperature is reshaping maternal care. Research shows that these biometrics can flag early warning signs of complications before obvious symptoms appear.

A 2023 study at Oregon Health & Science University, co-authored by Dr. Clara Mosquera-Lopez, showed that wearable rings can track digital biomarkers during pregnancy. Using heart rate variability and temperature, the team trained a model that predicted whether pregnancies would extend beyond the due date estimated by gestational age—demonstrating how consumer-friendly wearables can support timely, data-driven care. Reviews of devices that track uterine contractions, fetal movement, and oxygenation likewise find that, when paired with AI analytics, they can help clinicians detect risks earlier and intervene sooner.

Together, these findings show that AI-powered biometric monitoring can move care from reactive to proactive and provide the scientific foundation for BobiHealth’s evidence-based approach.

The Loneliness Problem—and the Rise of AI Companions

Pregnancy is also an emotional journey. The 2021 Making Caring Common Project at Harvard University found that 21% of Americans experience serious loneliness. Many expectant parents feel isolated or anxious between appointments, unsure whether what they are experiencing is “normal.” Studies suggest that AI companions can reduce feelings of loneliness, but researchers also warn that overreliance on AI can reduce real-world social contact. That tension shapes how we design our technology: to encourage human connection, not replace it.

Meet the Pregnancy BFF: BobiHealth’s Digital Companion

To address both physical and emotional needs, we created the Bobi BFF Chatbot, a digital pregnancy companion that blends biometric intelligence with compassionate, evidence-based conversation.

- Trained by clinical experts: Designed with input from obstetricians, midwives, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists.
- Supportive, not substitutive: Enhances care between routine appointments but never replaces professional medical advice.
- Personalized insights: Available 24/7, the BFF reminds users to log symptoms and mood, interprets biometric signals, and provides alerts or resources when needed.

By combining real-time monitoring with emotionally aware check-ins and clear escalation guidance when something feels wrong, the Bobi BFF helps parents feel informed and supported—and get connected to real people sooner.

Mental Health: Guardrails Against Misinformation

Even before the isolation of COVID-19, people were turning to technology for answers around sensitive mental health concerns. Consider a mother who vapes during pregnancy and searches for reassurance. Without context, messages implying that vaping is “less harmful than smoking” can normalize unsafe behavior. Many people struggle to evaluate scientific claims, and loneliness during pregnancy and postpartum further heightens vulnerability.

The Bobi BFF Chatbot is designed to support mental health while protecting human connection. It checks in on mood, sleep, stress, and worry. If a user reports feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsafe, it encourages specific next steps: reaching out to a support person, contacting a mental health professional or OB provider, or in urgent situations seeking immediate care. The chatbot can also suggest language to use with partners, family, or trusted friends, lowering the barrier to asking for help.

For ongoing concerns such as anxiety, trouble sleeping, or intrusive thoughts, the BFF offers evidence-based coping strategies and prompts users to raise those concerns with their care team at the next visit. For signs of acute crisis, it directs users to licensed mental health professionals and emergency resources.

Large language models can assist with emotional support, but they cannot replace the empathy, judgment, and accountability that come from real relationships. Our goal is not to replace clinicians, counselors, partners, or friends—it is to help users reach them sooner.

The Business Case: Beyond Cost Savings

For employers and health plans, supporting pregnant members is both compassionate and financially smart. Using our Maternal and Newborn Cost Calculator, we modeled 26,000 pregnancies for a large U.S. employer and found nearly $1 billion in annual exposure from medical costs, preterm births, NICU stays, and productivity losses.

Even modest improvements in preterm birth or severe maternal morbidity can generate substantial savings. Better monitoring reduces NICU stays, supports safer deliveries, and strengthens families. Just as important, when employers offer BobiHealth to pregnant employees or customers, they send a powerful message: we care about you and your family from the very beginning. That builds loyalty, trust, and long-term advocacy for employers, healthcare providers, and brands.

Looking Ahead

Imagine a world where no pregnant person feels alone and biometric data provides early warnings before complications arise. Where AI companions support mental wellbeing and spark human connection, and clinicians are empowered—not replaced—by technology.

That is the vision behind BobiHealth’s Pregnancy Tracking App and Bobi BFF Chatbot, a digital companion that brings personalized insights and medically reviewed advice to every pregnancy. We believe everyone deserves a safe pregnancy, and with AI and edge technology, we are building the tools to make that vision real.
